Heroes… by the book
These days it is easy to find a literary hero or heroine for your children to relate to. With the popularity of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, your children can dream of waking one day with extraordinary or superhuman abilities that will help save the day.
As the official school year ends and you create a summer reading list for your children, consider including some classic heroes for them to admire. While they may not be as flashy and popular as Harry, maybe Athos, Porthos, and Aramis from The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas will speak to their hearts for having very human traits such as… bravery, honor, and devotion.
Here are a few of our family favorites… Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Stuart Little, Pippi Longstocking, Frodo from the Lord of the Rings, and Anne from Anne of Green Gables. There are also wonderful animal heroes such as Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web, Mathias the mouse from the Redwall series, and Hazel the rabbit from Watership Down. .
What are your favorites? Are you sharing them with the next generation?
