Midafternoon Snack
Each afternoon around 3 o’clock, each one of us in the house reaches a certain undesirable point. The lessons for the day have all been taught. There’s usually been a craft project (or two or three) tackled. We have eaten breakfast, a mid-morning snack, and lunch. Our creative energies have been tapped…individually and collectively. Yet there we are with a full evening waiting for us.
It is at this time nearly every day when snack & story time become a sacred event. We all settle in around our informal dining room table with some nourishment…cookies if we’re lucky, crackers or pretzels if need be. We usually add in either hot cocoa, peppermint tea, or just a simple glass of milk…but our beverage of choice is almost served in some sort of fancy mug or teacup. We replenish our sugar levels while the words of our current read fill our souls.
And just like that, we are rejuvenated! A simple snack, a story, a few moments to rest and come back to our collective center have given us the fresh start we need to proceed with our evening’s activities. This simple ritual offers us a much needed new beginning on an aging day. And I honestly cannot decide who enjoys this time more…my little ones or me!
