What is a Hero

When thinking of what to write this month for the topic of heroes, I started to ask myself some very basic questions to try and brainstorm a bit. As I sat and went through these prompts in my mind, I found myself wondering how my children, ages three, six, and seven, would answer these same questions. My children, in general, are the greatest teachers and my most valuable resource for inspiration, so I took the questions to them. And instead of taking their thoughts and ideas for my own inspiration, I thought I would share them with you for yours.

What is a hero?
Maya (age 3)- Someone who flies!
Layla (age 6)- A hero is a person that rescues people.
Rayne (age 7)- A hero is someone who saves the day.

What makes heroes different from other people?
M- They’re scared
L- They don’t look the same and they do not the same things
R- Because all heroes have something special about them. Like mechanics. Mechanics are sometimes heroes because if you have a dad that is a mechanic like we do, then maybe if we got a flat tire while riding on the road then he could rush us to his work.

Can anyone be a hero or do you need to have special powers?
M- Special powers…to fly
L- Special powers…to be brave and strong
R- Anyone could be a hero!

What does it mean to save someone?
M- Rescuers..savers
L- To rescue them from something very bad that they don’t want to do
R- To be nice and help them get where they want to go and do what they want to do

Do you know any heroes?
M- Uuum…Daddy
L- No.
R- Yes…Daddy, Mommy, Layla, Maya… Because they make me happy when I’m sad and all their talents help me have a good life

Do you think Daddy is a hero? Why or why not?
M- Mmm hmm…because he flies
L- Yeah, kind of. He doesn’t do things that we do. Like work…we don’t work.
R- (na-answered previously)

Do you think Mommy is a hero? Why or why not?
M- Nooooo! Cause’ you not have wings or pixie dust or magic.
L- Mmm hmm. Because you stay here with us and Daddy doesn’t do that.
R- (na-answered previously)

Do you know of anyone who needs a hero right now?
M- Raynie…needs rescued from a giant
L- Nobody
R- Gram…because she might be miserable in the nursing home and she might need someone to cheer her up

Do you think you are a hero? If someone needed saving could you help them?
M- Mmm hmm
L- Yeah. I can draw to make someone feel better. And take care of my sisters.
R- Uh-huh. Maybe if someone had trouble drawing things I could give them some drawing tips. And if someone is very sad then maybe I could cheer them up by telling them a few jokes.
