Lazy Days

This month we have been discussing the theme “recess”.  When I hear the word recess my mind automatically goes to school days and playing on the monkey bars, so I was stuck at first on how to apply the word “recess” to me. What are my breaks? How do I unwind?  Do I unwind???  Of course I do. Life with little ones can make those moments fleeting, but they are there.  Sometimes you need to schedule them in, carve time out, even if it is just 15 minutes,  just for you.

Summertime lends itself to laziness don’t you think?  Laziness (the word) gets a bad rap.  If we are being lazy we are not attending to something more important.  Slacking off.  No no no,  we need to switch that switch in our brains and embrace the word.  Lazy makes me think of lingering, lounging,  savoring a moment.  Being still, embracing the quiet, soaking in the present, not hurrying on to the next “to-do”.

My favorite kinds of moments are like the one in my photo above. Warm summer sun, a favorite thrifted sheet of mine laid out in the soft grass. A good book, a cold glass of sun tea, a plate of summer tomatoes, eaten just as my Pop-Pop taught me, quartered and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Bare feet, wildflowers, dappled sun, warm breeze, kids playing happily somewhere nearby, me being “lazy” and loving every minute. Just looking at it makes my shoulders loosen a little.

“Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.” ~Sam Keen

How do you define recess?
Are you ready to embrace your inner laziness?
Summer is just begging you to.
